1. Paint her nails. Then let her scratch it off and dirty them up. Teach her to care about her appearance, and then quickly remind her that living and having fun is most important.

2. Let her put on your makeup, even if it means bright-red-smudged lips and streaked-blue eyes. Let her experiment in her attempts to be like you…then let her be herself.

3. Let her be wild. She may want to stay home and read books on the couch, or she may want to hop on the back of a motorcycle-gasp. She may be a homebody or a traveler. She may fall in love with the wrong boy, or meet mr. right at age 5. Try to remember that you were her age once. Everyone makes mistakes, let her make her own.

4. Be present. Be there for her at her Kindergarten performances, her dance recitals, her soccer games…her everyday-little-moments. When she looks through the crowds of people, she will be looking for your smile and pride. Show it to her as often as possible.

5. Encourage her to try on your shoes and play dress-up. If she would rather wear her brother’s superman cape with high heals, allow it. If she wants to wear a tutu or dinosaur costume to the grocery store, why stop her? She needs to decide who she is and be confident in her decision.

6. Teach her to be independent. Show her by example that woman can be strong. Find and follow your own passions. Search for outlets of expression and enjoyment for yourself- not just your husband or children. Define yourself by your own attributes, not by what others expect you to be. Know who you are as a person, and help your daughter find out who she is.

7. Pick flowers with her. Put them in her hair. There is nothing more beautiful than a girl and a flower.

8. Let her get messy. Get messy with her, no matter how much it makes you cringe inside. Splash in the puddles, throw snowballs, make mud pies, finger paint the walls: just let it happen. The most wonderful of memories are often the messy ones.

9. Give her good role models- you being one of them. Introduce her to successful woman- friends, co-workers, doctors, astronauts, or authors. Read to her about influential woman- Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Marie Curie. Read her the words of inspirational woman- Jane Austen, Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson. She should know that anything is possible.

10. Show her affection. Daughters will mimic the compassion of their mother. “I love yous” and Eskimo kisses go a long way.

11. Hold her hand. Whether she is 3 years-old in the parking lot or sixteen years old in the mall, hold on to her always- this will teach her to be confident in herself and proud of her family.

12. Believe in her. It is the moments that she does not believe in herself that she will need you to believe enough for both of you. Whether it is a spelling test in the first grade, a big game or recital, a first date, or the first day of college…remind her of the independent and capable woman you have taught her to be.

13. Tell her how beautiful she is. Whether it is her first day of Kindergarten, immediately after a soccer game where she is grass-stained and sweaty, or her wedding day. She needs your reminders. She needs your pride. She needs your reassurance. She is only human.

14. Love her father. Teach her to love a good man, like him. One who lets her be herself…she is after all wonderful.

15. Make forts with boxes and blankets. Help her to find magic in the ordinary, to imagine, to create and to believe in fairy tales. Someday she will make her 5 by 5 dorm-room her home with magic touches and inspiration. And she will fall in love with a boy and believe him to be Prince Charming.

16. Read to her. Read her Dr. Seuss and Eric Carle. But also remember the power of Sylvia Plath and Robert Frost. Show her the beauty of words on a page and let her see you enjoy them. Words can be simply written and simply spoken, yet can harvest so much meaning. Help her to find their meaning.

17. Teach her how to love- with passion and kisses. Love her passionately. Love her father passionately and her siblings passionately. Express your love. Show her how to love with no restraint. Let her get her heart broken and try again. Let her cry, and gush, giggle and scream. She will love like you love or hate like you hate. So, choose love for both you and her.

18. Encourage her to dance and sing. Dance and sing with her- even if it sounds or looks horrible. Let her wiggle to nursery rhymes. Let her dance on her daddy's feet and spin in your arms. Then later, let her blast noise and headbang in her bedroom with her door shut if she wants. Or karaoke to Tom Petty in the living room if she would rather. Introduce her to the classics- like The Beatles- and listen to her latest favorite- like Taylor Swift. Share the magic of music together, it will bring you closer- or at least create a soundtrack to your life together.

19. Share secrets together. Communicate. Talk. Talk about anything. Let her tell you about boys, friends, school. Listen. Ask questions. Share dreams, hopes, concerns. She is not only your daughter, you are not only her mother. Be her friend too.

20. Teach her manners. Because sometimes you have to be her mother, not just her friend. The world is a happier place when made up of polite words and smiles.

21. Teach her when to stand-up and when to walk away. Whether she has classmates who tease her because of her glasses, or a boyfriend who tells her she is too fat - let her know she does not have to listen. Make sure she knows how to demand respect - she is worthy of it. It does not mean she has to fight back with fists or words, because sometimes you say more with silence. Also make sure she knows which battles are worth fighting. Remind her that some people can be mean and nasty because of jealousy, or other personal reasons. Help her to understand when to shut her mouth and walk-away. Teach her to be the better person.

22. Let her choose who she loves. Even when you see through the charming boy she thinks he is, let her love him without your disapproving words; she will anyway. When he breaks her heart, be there for her with words of support rather than I told-you-so. Let her mess up again and again until she finds the one. And when she finds the one, tell her.

23. Mother her. Being a mother - to her - is undoubtedly one of your greatest accomplishments. Share with her the joys of motherhood, so one day she will want to be a mother too. Remind her over and over again with words and kisses that no one will ever love her like you love her. No one can replace or replicate a mother's love for their children.

24. Comfort her. Because sometimes you just need your mommy. When she is sick, rub her back, make her soup and cover her in blankets - no matter how old she is. Someday, if she is giving birth to her own child, push her hair out of her face, encourage her, and tell her how beautiful she is. These are the moments she will remember you for. And someday when her husband rubs her back in attempt to comfort her...she may just whisper, "I need my mommy."

25. Be home. When she is sick with a cold or broken heart, she will come to you; welcome her. When she is engaged or pregnant, she will run to you to share her news; embrace her. When she is lost or confused, she will search for you; find her. When she needs advice on boys, schools, friends or an outfit; tell her. She is your daughter and will always need a safe harbor - where she can turn a key to see comforting eyes and a familiar smile; be home.

Here are some helpful tips to add to your baby proofing checklist that we found on www.babble.com:

• The biggest things to look out for are small objects that your baby can put in his or her mouth. Look for things like loose change, screws, medicine bottles, batteries, pens, etc. It is safe to assume that your baby will put everything in his or her mouth, so regularly scan for anything unsafe.

• Another big thing to look out for is plastic bags lying around. This goes for trash bags in small bathroom and bedroom garbage cans at baby-reaching level. • It’s time to buy covers for all of your electrical outlets!

• If your baby has started to pull up on furniture, you might want to consider cushioning sharp corners (or replacing especially dangerous pieces of furniture) and rearranging certain pieces.

• Also make sure that large furniture like TVs, bookshelves and entertainment centers are anchored down. These kinds of accidents accounted for 14,000 child accidents last year.

• Tie up any blind or drapery cords that your baby could get his or her hands on.

• That pretty antique vase on top of the end table? You might want to rethink that. The same goes for any objects that can be easily knocked down when your baby pulls up on furniture.

• Keep dangerous items like razors, hair dryers, flat irons, nail polish remover, mouthwash, and rubbing alcohol in a higher cabinet, out of your baby’s reach.

• Unplug appliances when they’re not in use, and make sure that cords are out of your baby’s reach

Landry, mother of two children ages 11 months and 5, because a certified child passenger safety technician when she learned that 75% of all car seats are used incorrectly.

The ultimate job of a car seat is to minimize injury to your child during a crash. Injury can be cause by:

 • Intruding objects making contact with your child

• Your child hitting something in the vehicle

 • Your child’s body coming to a sudden halt

To prevent the above injuries, follow these best practices provided by our friend at Britax USA:

 1. Make sure your child is secured in the back seat of your vehicle

2. Make sure to read user manuals for cars and car seats to be aware of any specific requirements

3. Install your car seat either using the LATCH or the vehicle seat belt (but do not use both)

4. The harness straps should be threaded through the slots at or below the child’s shoulders on a rear-facing car seat or at or above the child’s shoulders in a forward-facing car seat

5. Be sure that the harness strap is comfortable but tight enough so that the straps cannot be pinched between your fingers.

6. Planning to fly? Be sure to check your car seat before leaving for the airport

7. Register your car seat with the manufacturer in the event that there is a recall or safety notice, you’ll be the first to know!

Modern Parents Messy Kids

Let the kids help make popcorn with this easy trick:

Ingredients

•¼ cup popcorn kernels, preferably organic

•Brown paper lunch bag

•Optional: Melted butter, oil, and/or salt

Directions

1.Pour the kernels into the brown paper bag. 2.Tightly fold over the top three or four times. No tape or staples are necessary. 3.Put it in the microwave and start it on high for 3 minutes and 30 seconds. 4.Listen for the popping to slow down to 3 or 4 seconds apart at which point you will take it out of the microwave. This usually happens for me around the 3 minute and 15 second mark. 5.Pour popcorn into a bowl and drizzle with melted butter or spritz with olive oil and then sprinkle with salt. If you don’t use oil or butter the salt won’t stick.

Custom Colors How-To

Start with flat-finish latex paint in any shade. For small areas, such as a door panel, mix 1 cup at a time.

1. Pour 1 cup of paint into a container. Add 2 tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. Mix with a paint stirrer, carefully breaking up clumps.

2. Apply paint with a roller or a sponge paintbrush to a primed or painted surface. Work in small sections, going over the same spot several times to ensure full, even coverage. Let dry.

3. Smooth area with 150-grit sandpaper, and wipe off dust.

4. To condition: Rub the side of a piece of chalk over entire surface. Wipe away residue with a barely damp sponge.

12" x 12" square of each color

White craft glue

How to make it:

1. Roll the construction paper into a cone shape, tape closed

Electrical cords on baby monitors must now be labeled with a strangulation hazard warning under a new ASTM International safety standard. The standard is in response to reports by the Consumer Product Safety Commission that seven infants died as a result of strangling in baby monitor cords that were placed too close to a crib.

The new label also reminds parents and caregivers to mount the cord more than three feet away from the crib. Consumer Reports Baby Product Testing Program Leader, Joan Murature says "This safety standard is a good first step toward preventing incidents with baby monitor cords.”

What is the ASTM trying to achieve with this standard? It’s as simple as awareness. Keeping parents aware of the dangers and potential consequences of a cord from the monitor finding it’s way around the child’s neck could save lives in the future.

With summer approaching, another danger for children are the hot temperatures in the car.

With the hot weather and official start of summer last week, now is a good time for parents to consider the dangers of leaving children in hot cars. According to Consumer Reports, in 2011, 33 children were killed due to hyperthermia. In 2010, that number was 49 children and most of the fatalities were children under 4 years old.

It may seem like an impossible thing to do, but clearly the unthinkable can and does happen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just announced a campaign to educate and urge parents to think "Where's baby? Look before you lock."

Here are some tips to help keep your children safe.

• Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, not even for a minute. In addition to being dangerous, it is the law in many states.

• Check the car to make sure that all occupants leave the vehicle or are carried out when unloading. If you lock the door with a key, rather than with a remote, it would force that one last look in the car before leaving it.

• Always lock your car and keep keys and remotes away from children.

• Keep a stuffed animal in the front passenger seat as a reminder of a child in the backseat.

• Place something in the backseat that you would need, such as a purse, briefcase or cell phone.

• Have a plan that your childcare provider will call you if your child does not show up.

• If you see a child alone in a car, especially if they seem hot, call 911 immediately to help get them out.

2. What has been the biggest shock or surprise since becoming a Dad?

My wife, Cheryl, and I often talk about how different our kids personalities are even though we raised them in the same manner.

3. What is your favorite activity with your kids?

I am an outdoors person so anything that gets us outside. Right now our favorite thing is riding bikes and hiking. 

4. What has been your best/proudest “Dad Moment” to date?

Having my children see and remember me playing professional baseball. The sport, up until now has been a large part of my life and for them to be able to see a part of that means a great deal to me.

5. Tell us about the most embarrassing moment with your kids….you know, that “kid’s say or do the darndest things moment.”

One of our funniest moments was when our son Brody was 3. He loved saying the word "poop" so my wife turns around and asked Brody to stop saying the word and that it was inappropriate. Brody responded by saying "mommy, you mean it is ina"poop"riate? We all were in tears after that one.

Max 3.5 year old; fun, happy, and energetic boy who loves to play sports. His favorites are hockey, baseball, and soccer.

William 2 year old boy. He isn't into sport as much as his big brother. Loves to play with cars and cause mischief.

Ryane 5 month old girl. She is a great baby and we love having a girl in the mix.

2. What has been the biggest shock or surprise since becoming a Dad?

 The dissapearance of freetime. It is totally worth it and I really dont miss it, but its funny how the kids take up all of your freetime

3. What is your favorite activity with your kids?

I love doing anything active and outdoors with the kids. Playing baseball in the yard or playing hockey in the garage are two of my favorites.

4. What has been your best/proudest “Dad Moment” to date?

 So many proud parent moments:

Bringing the boys into the locker room after one of our hockey games.

An unprompted occassion of Max or Will telling me or my wife that they love us.

Watching Max and Will be nice to each other and their sister, and give them things that our 'theirs'.

Watching Max hit baseballs, or watching him skate on the ice.

5. Tell us about the most embarrassing moment with your kids….you know, that “kid’s say or do the darndest things moment.”

There have been a few embarrissing moments with my oldest boy Max. Every time his brother or sister dirties their diaper, he says really loudly "I smell poop." There have been a couple of times where this has happened in public and I get a few funny looks our way. Also, although Max may have outgrown his favorite shirt (sleeveless that is) - he insists on wearing this scooby-doo tank top frequently.

2. What has been the biggest shock or surprise since becoming a Dad?

Besides my daughter being born on the living room floor I'd have to to say loving being a Dad so much was surprise. I knew I would love it but I wasn't prepared for just how much I'd enjoy it. I can't wait to get home to see my kids and miss them when I'm at work more than I expected. They are truly my best buddies right now.

3. What is your favorite activity with your kids?

My favorite is either the park or the pool. They both enjoy being outside and can't wait to get out there from the moment they wake up. So spending time outdoors is our activity. I get to spend mornings with them before work so we get lots of daddy time. 

4. What has been your best/proudest “Dad Moment” to date?

This is a tough one... but it has to be when my son pushed away another boy who was trying to play with my daughter at daycare. Not that I want him pushing anyone but seeing him protect his sister at this age made me proud. That and Kyler loving the rain! :-)

5. Tell us about the most embarrassing moment with your kids….you know, that “kid’s say or do the darndest things moment.”

I really haven't had too many of these yet, Kinley is too young for that. Kyler has been pretty good too but saying he wanted poop for dinner in public was his crowning moment.

With that new pair of shoes for inspiration, Emmanuel Ohonme went on to compete in sports activities in Africa. Specifically, he developed a love as well as superior talent for competitive basketball. His skill and confidence continued to flourish; his hard work and determination to succeed finally paid off. He was offered the chance to attend an institution of higher learning in America under a full basketball scholarship! He met his wife, Tracie, while attending the University of North Dakota (Lake Region) and he later earned an executive position in a leading technology company. In spite of his successes in America, Manny never forgot the other little boys and girls in Africa who were still living under the strain of poverty, drug abuse, war, gangs and other criminal activity. Determined to help impoverished people in Africa, Manny left the comfort and security of his executive position to birth the vision of Samaritan’s Feet.

Manny is happily married to Tracie, his wife of seventeen years. They now reside in Charlotte, North Carolina with their four children Nike, Dele, Yemi, and Wale. Together, they are working to make the vision of Samaritan’s Feet to put 10 million pairs of shoes on the feet of 10 million orphans and impoverished children in this country and around the world a reality. Through Samaritan’s Feet, Manny has the opportunity to continue the legacy of love and hope he received when he was given his first pair of shoes and make a difference in the lives of millions.

It is whenever I see my children being selfless and caring for others. I love seeing my children lead and guide their friends and live a life that glorifies God.

 It’s not one moment but occasionally I will have flashbacks to when I grew up in Africa and my old African dialect comes back. My children look at me like a crazy person because they cannot understand a word I am saying.

Here is our Q&A with Chris:

 1. Tell us about your kids?

 My son's name is Kiran. He is one and a half years old. He has no brothers or sisters. One day he'll get a dog. When he's old enough to really beg for one. He's an exceptionally cool kid who is an avid truck and car enthusiast. He enjoys the antics of Winnie the Pooh and has attended several Los Angeles Clippers basketball games. They're 4-1 under his watchful eye and the crowd always gets a big kick out of him when he's on the jumbotron. Especially the time he was asleep in the fourth quarter. Kiran loves going to the beach, playing with the neighbor girl Harlee, and pretending to talk on the phone. He is planning on rebelling against his parents and growing up to be smart and quiet. Unlike them.

2. What has been the biggest shock or surprise since becoming a Dad.

The sleep deprivation is insanely jarring. There's nothing you can do to truly prepare for it. People warn you, but there's no way to know how bad it gets til your waist deep in it. I never drank coffee until I became adad. Now I need it to live. Hold on a second. WHERE THE CRAP IS DADDY'S COFFEE!!!!?? Oh there it is. Ahhhhhhh. Better than a tub full of Calgon and Sports Center.

3. What is your favorite activity with your kids?

I love cracking Kiran up. When I really break him and he goes into giggle hysterics. When we play hide and seek (I always hide and he always seeks how cool is that?) and I run behind a door or duck under a chair and yell, "you can't find me" and he comes running in full on belly laughing. The pure glee. The unabashed joy. Truly loving the moment.

4. What has been your favorite/best "Dad Moment" to date?

One Clipper day game we attended just father and 15 month old son. We drove downtown together and used the carpool lane. Kiran slept in the car. We got a killer free parking spot on the street by our entrance. We walked into the stadium and a scalper asked me if I needed tickets and I told him, "nah this guys a season ticket holder, he's got me". We cruised into our section and plopped down. Kiran sat on my lap the whole game. Never fussed once. Not a single tear. We fed each other snacks. We got on the tron and Iswiped Kiran's bottle took a slurp of milk and he swiped it back. Later in the game we were on jumbotron again, this time dad was lip synching Welcome to the Jungle while Kiran laughed and smiled. The Clippers won in overtime. We clapped and high fived and cheered for the good guys. Best day ever. We both slept that night!

5. Tell us about the most embarrassing moment with your kids….you know, that “kid’s say or do the darndest  things moment.”

I've been peed on, pooped on, puked on, and put upon. Kiran's growled at strangers, tried to take a swing at a little old lady, and made a scene in a restaurant or two. But all in all, I'm definitely the embarrassing one in the family. I wouldn't trade being a dad for anything in the world.

•  Using medium-high heat, bring water to a boil and completely immerse the Soothie into the boiling water
•  Let the soothie sit in the boiling water for 2-5 minutes
•  Use tongs to remove and let cool
